If someone took a look at my Google Calendar, I have a strong feeling they be overcome with an immense feeling second-hand overwhelming-ness. Although my days start at 9 am, the content of them is so demanding that I typically avoid looking at my Google Calendar at all means necessary. Of course, when I don't check it I typically miss a meeting with a prof, an appointment, or oversleep (#classicellamove), so I usually force myself to at least glance at the day overview during my "morning routine". Instead of just describing a typical crazy packed college day for me, I decided to #switchitup and take some pics last Tuesday (May 15).
So, typically, I wake up at 9 am, except on Mondays, when I get up at 8:30 (trust me, it's a big difference). But we're not talking about Monday here, people. We're discussing a Tuesday. Before deciding I should probably regulate my sleep schedule instead of getting up at the very last moment every day and throwing on a pair of leggings and an oversized t-shirt, my mornings consisted of rolling out of bed, brushing my teeth, and sprinting to class. But, for the past few months I have tried to get up at 9 am to see what a real morning is.
On Thursday my alarm went off at 9 and I did not get out of bed until around 9:13 am. And this is usually what happens, but at least I'm conscious earlier than usual, it's all about the progress, peeps. Below we have a picture that accurately depicts how I feel about waking up:
After getting up I immediately start my Keurig because, unfortunately (?), after working as a camp counselor I got addicted to coffee and need a cup every morning to function. Maybe some day I'll be less dependent on caffeine to survive, but, alas, today is not that day. After brushing my teeth and washing my face, for a lot shorter period of time that is recommended, but, hey, what am I doing? THAT, I drink my coffee as I continue my very uncomplicated getting-ready process (getting dressed, making my bed [admittedly, this is a new development in my life], and putting in my contacts). While preparing myself for the day ahead I listen to my favorite podcast of all-time: My Favorite Murder hosted by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff. I am obssessed, and if you like true crime, you should listen to it. I recently submitted my hometown murder (David Brom) and am excitedly waiting for the day they choose my murder to share on a Mini-Episode.
Once the clock hits 10:17 I throw on my Chaco's and speed-walk to the Campus Center to check my mailbox, because I love checking my mail, okay? And after that (usually around 10:23) I speed-walk even faster than before to my first class of the day: German 102 at 10:30. On this particular Thursday there was an appreciation party for Education Student Workers (aka me) and I saw that they still had iced coffee as I walked to German and, of course, I went for my second cup in an hour even though I only had one NutriGrain bar in my stomach, so sue me.
After German I walk the 100 steps it takes to get the Education building to go to my favorite class: Education Technology (my two favorite things in one class? Sign me up pls) that happens at 11:30. That Tuesday was actually our last time meeting. And since I've pretty much had the only project assigned for that class done since early April, I just messed around on Buzzfeed and perfected the fonts on my website.
After Ed Tech I just walk down the stairs to my 12:15-1:15 shift in the Education Office. By this point in the air there aren't typically substantial projects to work on so I use this time on Tuesdays specifically to create a new whiteboard for the office (my pride and joy) and working on homework. This might not exactly sound stressful, but choosing the design for the whiteboard is full of a lot of self-inflicted pressure and I have to make sure I make it as close to perfect as possible.
After work I have my Coaching class from 1:30-2:20 in a building on the opposite side of campus, so guess what I usually do? Some more pro speed-walking, of course! Sometimes I stop to get a snack between work and Coaching because I only eat a granola bar in the morning (around 9:20) because my stomach hates me and doesn't like eating in the morning. Sometimes I bring a snack, but it's typically only an apple, and this gal needs a little more than that to survive. This particular Tuesday I stopped at the Courtyard Caf, Gustavus' coffee shop, and got my favorite Sour Cream and Chive chips.
On this Tuesday I was meeting another Rugby player to take care of senior present things and had some time between class and our meeting to quick grab some food. And because it was Tuesday the caf was serving my all-time meal from the Gustavus caf: chicken cordon bleu and rice pilaf! And because it was super nice out (aka warmer than 40 degrees) I decided to eat my meal outside on a bench and try to get some more color.
After meeting the rugger to take care of business I had some free time and went back to my room to rest before my Writing Center staff meeting. This was around 4 and band rehearsal is at 5:00 pm every Tuesday. On this Tuesday it was our last staff meeting for the year so we had a little party (with Doritos and Minute Maid lemonade--aka the best party ever).
Because I also have band on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:45 pm I can only stay at our Writing Center staff meetings until 5:45 due to an agreement between my Writing Center boss and band director. Luckily, our party was super close to the music building so I didn't have to walk as far as usual. Because I leave my phone in my locker during rehearsals (everyone needs a break), I don't have any pictures. But that rehearsal was used to prepare for the concert we had this past Saturday! After band I walk right to work. On Tuesdays I work from 7:00-9:00 pm in the lib location of the Writing Center. I usually drop my stuff off in our small room and quick do some more speed-walking to the caf to get dinner before my shift starts.
That Tuesday I did not have any appointments so I spent my time doing my daily German homework (yay) and catching up on blog posts from my fave blogs. I make myself do productive things during my work shifts because I honestly can't guarantee I'll be able to convince myself to do the things on my to-do list when I get back to my room after work.
At 9 pm I speed-walk at the fastest speed of the day back to my room because I'm finally free. Once I get back to my room I typically allow myself to rest and recuperate. Sometimes this includes reading or writing blog posts. But usually, like this Tuesday, it consists of more My Favorite Murder, watching YouTube, or catching up on Netflix (#sorrynotsorry).
Once the clock hits 10:30 I usually wrap up my self-care and begin my "evening routine", which pretty much means I take a shower, take out my contacts, brush my teeth, was my face, and then lay in my bed on my phone.
And there you have it: a day in my very busy, and hectic life as a college student. And, to be quite honest, this was one of my lighter days because I didn't have rugby, my Little Partner, or any other meetings for student orgs or work shifts for other jobs.
Peace & blessings,
A stressed college student
